The Orangerie, Palo Alto, Ca
Meeting the challenge of sensitively integrating new construction with a vintage home in the French tradition, Architect Richard Kasten drew inspiration for his design of an addition, housing Kitchen, Family Room, and additional Bedroom suites for a growing family, from classic 18th Century French Greenhouses, or Orangeries.
Rather than extend the imposing mass of the original residence, the addition is composed of more intimate, one and two story elements, which continue and re-interpret fine original details, creating a gracious transition to the extensive terraces and gardens.
